Rocks that glow, and the people who dig them.

The Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society: seven meetings a year, field trips to the quarries of the Franklin Marble, and The Picking Table, our journal of the minerals of the Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World.

Join the Society

Next trip: Saturday, October 10, Hamburg Quarry, 8:30 am. The fall schedule

Meetings

1:30 pm on the third Saturday of March, April, May, June, September, October and November, usually in Kraissl Hall at the Franklin Mineral Museum, 32 Evans Street, Franklin, NJ 07416. Open to the public: a short business session, then a lecture.

Field trips

Members dig at Braen Franklin, Hamburg, Limecrest, Taylor Road, Andover Mine and the dumps at Franklin and Sterling Hill. Trips are for members with dues paid; some quarries are 18 and older, and all need hard hat, glasses, gloves and boots. Dates and rules.

The quarries

What you will actually find on the ground at each place we dig, in daylight and under shortwave, midwave and longwave ultraviolet, so you bring the right lamp. Localities and minerals.

Minerals, lists and research

The Society's mineral lists, the Franklin mineral search and periodic table, fluorescent favorites, the glossary and the archive of The Picking Table live on fomsnj.org. This site is for the people, meetings, trips and quarries; that one is for the minerals.

The Mineralogy of Franklin and Ogdensburg, New Jersey, the Color Book, is available at the Franklin Mineral Museum and the Sterling Hill Mining Museum: $185 plus tax.
